“The Great Gatsby” review

“The Great Gatsby” by F.Scott Fitzgerald, one of America’s classic lits, was a book I was required to read for my high school English 2 class. I rate this a 2.5-3 out of 5 stars.

Mingling with the party crowd of 1920’s New York, Nick Carroway finds himself caught in the sidelines of a love triangle between his cousin Daisy Buchanan, her unfaithful husband Tom Buchanan, and her ex lover Jay Gatsby.

As the story unfolds, the reader learns of the not-so-secret relations between Tom and his mistress, Myrtle Wilson, whom is also married. Truths are revealed, lines are crossed, and—let’s just say that not everyone turns out alive at the end of the novel that Fitzgerald so effortlessly strung together.

Being the Grammar Nazi that I am, I feel that I would have appreciated this story more if Fitzgerald had put more precision into his sentence structure. The words didn’t seem to fit together at parts, and sometimes I had to re-read a sentence three times over just to understand. Nevertheless, this was a beautifully told love story and maybe in the future I can have more time to appreciate it.

(Also, I enjoyed Fitzgerald’s abilities to play on the character’s names to show their personalities–ie, Tom Buchanan. His last name sounds like “buck” which symbolizes the wealth he assumes, and “cannon”, which exemplifies his power and hostility.)

The Vampire Diaries 3×11

Season 3×11: Our Town

*SPOILER ALERT!!!*

The latest episode of The Vampire Diaries had many Delena fan girls on the edge of their seats, I’m sure. From the opening scene to Damon showering, to seeing Elena take out her frustration on the punching bag, until they were back on the front porch where they shared “the kiss that shook Mystic Falls”, and lastly when Damon acknowledged, “It is right, just not right now” kept me completely hooked in. Let’s get to the main points of the show.

  • What’s up with Stefan?

In my opinion, Stefan wouldn’t have gone through with driving Elena off the Whickery Bridge. He knew Klaus would fold in to the threat, because family is Klaus’s number one priority. It was a pretty dick move to pull though, considering Elena’s parents died on that bridge and Stefan was the one that saved her there. However, he had to put on a convincing act, otherwise Klaus would have known he was bluffing. Stefan wants to make Elena hate him too. If they were all lovey-dovey with each other, it would make getting even with Klaus difficult–he can’t let either of their humanities get in the way again. Perhaps Stefan doesn’t love Elena anymore, perhaps it’s all an act, but as of right now, it’s clear that Stefan’s main priority is get revenge on Niklaus for what he’s made him become. This was a great scene though, very intense. Nina’s acting was superb!

  • Should Tyler be put in the doghouse?

Alright, alright, so we used to sympathize Tyler during the whole Now-I’m-A-Werewolf-And-I-Love-My-Best-Friend’s-Girl-But-I-Can’t-Have-Her bit, but now that he’s a hybrid and with Caroline, he’s starting to act like the old Tyler again. The one that dated Vickie and got in fights with Jeremy too often. You’ve got to cut him a little bit of slack, though, on the note that he can’t control his sire to Klaus. I mean, c’mon. You can’t control being compelled. Think of a sire like 20 times the power of a compulsion. It was a good step for Tyler to tell Klaus he wouldn’t hurt Caroline, but as we see later on, as Car and Tyler were kissing, he bit her anyways. He did it, as I would say, accidentally on purpose. Of course, he didn’t mean to full on bite Caroline–which as we know would kill her, because he’s a hybrid–but because Klaus told him to, he had to. Just like when Andie was compelled by Stefan to jump to her death in front of Damon (Another dick move from Mr.Salvatore.)

  • Klauroline?

In Caroline’s dieing hours, we saw as Klaus came to her rescue and fed her his blood, turning her to a hybrid and, in addition, saving her life. However, I do not think there was any “sexual tension” between them as I’ve heard other viewers commenting on. Klaus lured Caroline into the vision of a beautiful world, with music and art, claiming that she could have it all if only she asked for it, but I couldn’t help but feel like it was all part of his plan. He made Tyler bite her for a reason. Stefan has been warning Klaus not to make any more hybrids, and here he is making one out of Elena’s best friend. And Stefan probably won’t be too happy when Caroline needs Elena’s blood to finish the transformation. It’s all part of who is the better villain. However, Klaus did seem to show a hint of his humanity on last Thursday’s episode. Perhaps it’s because Caroline reminds him so much of his sister, Rebekah? I guess we’ll see how this tale unfolds.

  • Meredith Fell

So, in episode 10 we were introduced to Dr.Meredith Fell, fellow vampire hunter and a love interest to Alaric Salzmann (In the books she is, anyway). I’m a little iffy about this one, something’s off about her. I think she was probably the one that was responsible for the murder of Bryan/Brian at the end of the episode. Either her or a new character that we’ve yet to be introduced to. It was a change to see an actual murder happen. Instead of seeing a vampire rip out a werewolf/hybrid heart, seeing a head get torn off or a vampire get staked, we actually got to see a human get staked! I’m interested to see how this storyline plays out.

Finally, the one I’ve been most anxious to discuss:

  • What’s locked up in that coffin?

Along with Klaus’s siblings, (Rebekah, one kid dead in the old world, one kid dead in the new world, Elijah, and two others) there is one extra coffin that Klaus has been protecting. Bonnie dreamt that inside the coffin was Klaus, holding the Original Witch’s necklace. Of all the other coffins, the ancient witch spirits do not want this one open. Think about it: the necklace, Klaus’s family, dangerous to even the witch spirits, it’s either Esther–the Original Witch–or Ayanna, Esther’s witch friend. I can’t seem to think of anyone else that could be in the coffin, other than one of Meredith’s ancestors. (A half-vamp vampire hunter, maybe? It’s just a thought.) That might explain why Meredith was suddenly introduced into the show… I’m still trying to tie up loose ends to these many suggestions. Let me know what you think. Feel free to leave comments on your ideas.

Until next time,
